Questions related to the sustainability of waste management and its future development have long resonated in Czech society. Although we are now able to ensure efficient sorting and the volume of separated waste is steadily increasing, recycling systems still face barriers to economic and environmental sensibility. At the same time, the problem of industrial waste and sorting plant rejects, which often account for 50-70% of the waste input, has remained systematically unaddressed for a long time. These residual wastes are characterised by their high calorific value and at the same time very low bulk density, which leads to significant logistics costs.
EVECO Brno, in cooperation with C-Energy Planá, has developed and put into operation a modular containerised plant for thermal processing and energy recovery of waste - the EVECONT microWtE. This created a very promising energy source with an output of approximately 2 MW and a processing capacity of up to 2,400 tonnes of waste per year.
The aim of the lecture is to introduce the new concept of the WtE unit as a valuable member of the small distributed energy sector and to clarify the principle of the economics of such an operation.
